Dispose of Pet Food and Supplies Right

Pet food and supplies can be donated to an animal shelter or rescue organization. For donation opportunities, contact your local animal shelter, animal rescue, homestead, or see the list below. Also, goods or items that are unwanted or no longer needed can be donated to family and friends who are pet owners.

See the list of locations below that accept donations of fresh, unopened, and unexpired pet food to maintain their facilities or help meet their organizational mission.

Do not place empty pet food or bird seed bags in curbside or drop-off recycling. Find a reuse or place them in the regular trash.

Cat Litter

Cat litter pails should be reused or placed in the regular trash. Do not put them in curbside recycling.

Some pet supply stores offer bulk refills of cat litter pails; check with your local store. You can also post plastic pails for free on donation sites or boards such as Freecycle. Many people, including gardeners, contractors, landscapers, and painters, use them for projects.

Cardboard cat litter boxes are fiber lined with plastic and the two materials cannot be separated for recycling. They are very similar to a large produce box that prevents moisture from affecting the goods inside.
